Nobody wants to feel they’re not living up to their full potential. And sometimes when you’re lost in this rat race trying to find yourselves, you need deep life advice to help guide you on the right path.

The kind of life advice I wish I knew sooner, to change the course of my life. It’s safe to say my 20s were somewhat uneventful.

I honestly feel like I was drifting through most of it. I had no passion, no confidence, and I felt completely lost.

Until I took control of my life and made decisions for my greater good, instead of accepting my circumstances.

I hope this list of life advice will help guide you through your difficulties and find the freedom to live your life for you.

Stop caring what people think of you

Embrace what makes you unique, even if it makes others uncomfortable.

Janelle Monae

This life advice of being unbothered could have spared me countless hours of indecision in my 20s.

That is because most of my choices revolve around what people would think of my actions and decisions.

The funny thing is, while we’re caring what others think about us and letting it dictate our life, they are busy living their life.

Regardless of what you do or say, people will always have something to say about it. But why should you care? It’s their thoughts.

So, why do we decide based on how we expect people to react? Or seek validations from others.

Sure, there are some people whose opinion you may want to consider, like parents, spouse…

But have you ever avoided doing something you wanted because you cared too much about what others may think?

Hell, I sure have. More than I would like to admit.

So next time you hesitate before doing what you wanted, think about your intention behind your decision first.

Is this for my greater good? Am I doing or not doing something because of the opinion of others?

Spend your money on experiences that make you happy

Money can’t make us happy. It’s the experiences that money offers that make us happy.

Latanya

Don’t waste your money on foolish material things that will never bring you fulfillment.

Denzel Washington said, “you’ll never see a U-Haul behind a hearse.” So, all the material things you collect, you can’t take with you when you die.

Instead of filling your space with things, fill your life with memories and experiences that make you happy.

For life is too short, so spend your time and money on experiences that impact your life and the life of others.

Live for yourself and not someone else

liv painting

The life advice I wish I knew sooner was to live life for me. And not for someone else.

Those closest to us always seem to want what’s best for us. But that doesn’t make it right, or what will make us happy.

If you know what you want out of life, why let the opinion of others dictate the direction of your life?

At the end of your life, it will leave you with regrets about the decisions you made or didn’t make.

So, starting today, decide what you want and take action toward it.

Not because of fear, or what someone thinks, but because you decided to.

You will fail. It’s inevitable. Get over it

You’re not obligated to win. You’re obligated to keep trying to do the best you can every day.

Marian Wright Edelman

Failure is a part of life; it doesn’t define who you are, so don’t beat yourself up over it.

Every time you fail, think about what life is trying to teach you at that moment.

The answer may not come immediately, but eventually.

But remember, failure is an important part of life. It is actually necessary for growth.

It’s through the life-altering lessons of failure that we develop character and true strength. Try as you may to avoid it, but it ultimately makes us better humans.

The important life lessons we can gain from failure include knowledge, experiences, resilience, growth and value. Read more here

So take my advice and embrace failure as an essential component of success.

Eat the damn cake and don’t feel guilty about it!

Life is about doing things that make us happy and if that means occasionally enjoying a slice of delicious cake, then so be it.

I don’t believe in restrictions on food. I believe in balance.

Eat fresh whole foods most of the time, but don’t deprive yourself of having foods that temporarily satisfy your taste buds.

Sure, it may add extra calories, but if your diet contains a variety of healthy foods, a slice of cake won’t hurt.

This may not even be about an actual cake, but about not getting so caught up in making decisions, being perfect, or being afraid to live a fulfilling life.

Always express gratitude to or for

Thank you is the best prayer that anyone could say.

Alice Walker

Constantly being in a state of gratitude is one of the best life advice I have ever received.

Instead of sweating the small things, complaining and blaming, be thankful. For all the little things God, the universe, the higher power have blessed you with.

Showing gratitude for the life and things you have will invite more blessings into your life.

When you only think about wanting, and focus on what you don’t have, you will miss the simple joys, and life will pass you by.

Love the people around you fully

No person is your friend who demands your silence or denies your right to grow.

Alice Walker

No one knows how long their human experience will last. You may have a ticking time bomb inside of you and not even know it.

So, make the most of life, live like there’s no tomorrow. And love fully, no holding back.

Never go a day without letting those around you know how you feel. And those you’re holding grudges against let it go. Forgive them, so you can be free.

Always surround yourself with people that bring you joy and avoid those with negative energy.

Stop worrying about having it all figured out

Challenges make you discover things about yourself that you never really knew.

Cicely Tyson

Stop wasting your time trying to understand or know everything. Because you never will.

My life has been full of trials and errors. I made a lot of stupid mistakes!

But like Maya Angelou said, “when you know better, you do better.”

With all the mistakes and lessons learned, I still don’t have it all figured out. And I take comfort in knowing that life is a journey that we may never truly understand.

Sometimes we are full of confidence, wisdom, and strength to overcome anything.

And sometimes not so much.

The crazy part is, the moment you feel you have it all figured out and you are the master of your life, that’s the moment life knocks you over to make you question everything.

So, my advice to you is to live day by day and stop trying to get everything perfect.

You have everything you will ever need within you

It’s my job to complete me and your opportunity to complete my completeness.

Lisa Nichols

Some life advice needs to be repeated for us to grasp the benefit. And this is one of them.

If no one ever told you, you need nothing or anyone outside yourself to complete you.

I have spent most of my life trying to find something or someone to complete me. To make me feel loved, happy and accepted.

But the funny thing is, all I needed was already within me. Not feeling like you’re enough can rob you of your happiness. And make you settle for less than what you deserve.

So, know that God created you perfectly imperfect, so embrace the beautiful mess that you are.

Let your intuition guide you toward a life of fulfillment.

A life with no limits to what you can do, have and become.

Though life experiences may rob us and fill us with fear, lower our confidence, and make us second guess ourselves. Know that you are enough just the way you are.

Life advice of knowing your worth

black woman in field of flowers looking

Stop settling for things or people that no longer serve you.

Be confident in who you are and know you are worthy of having a good, happy life filled with love.

No one can define your worth for you. Only you can.

So, know what you want out of life and move fearlessly towards it. Even though sometimes you will feel discouraged and unhappy about your life. That’s Ok!

No one is ever 100% all the time.

Our mistakes, our experiences, do not define us. We have to decide we are enough just the way we are.

And honey, never dim your light to let others shine. Keep your head up and remember you are worthy of having the best life, just like everyone else.

Learn to trust yourself

The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.

Alice Walker

You know that gut feeling you get when something feels wrong or off, like you just can’t put your finger on it.

You know like you know, but you can’t explain it. That feeling is your instinct or intuition. Trust it, but don’t mistake it for fear.

Your intuition is your internal guidance. It’s there to guide you and warn you of danger. So don’t ignore it.

When you go through tough experiences, or everything seems to be going wrong.

It may feel like the end of the world, but it’s just life pointing you in a better direction. Or instilling lessons needed for your journey.

Don’t worry, because life happens for you, not to you.

Sometimes when we’re lost in the day-to-day noise, it’s difficult to hear or tune into our intuition. But it’s always speaking to you. Take a moment to silence your mind so you can hear the universe speaking to you.

Final thoughts on deep life advice

There is more life advice I could include in this post, but sometimes living, making mistakes and learning from them is more worthwhile.

That is the best way to learn, through living a full life. Just let your intuition guide you.

But until a person can say deeply and honestly, I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday, that person cannot say, I choose otherwise.

Stephen R. Covey
